Photos of Africa slide show (17) I fell in love with Africa, its people and its animals. We were on safari and it was amazing how the people lived amongst the animals, how one could be out in a jeep with no windows and the animals really didn't seem to care. Never felt afraid there. I pine to go back.
Photos of Australia slide show (9) I absolutely loved Australia. It is a huge country and we had to take lots of internal flights to get to places like Sydney, Orpheus Island, Uluru (Ayers Rock), and Cairns. While I was intrigued by most of Australia, nothing moved me more than Uluru. (It is funny to think about this now, as before we left home, we weren't sure that we wanted to go see "a big rock.") But Uluru is much more than simply a rock. To the Aborigines, Uluru is a symbol of all creation, a sacred site for them. As a photographer, all I can say is I was compelled to take pictures at certain times, almost as if some other force was lifting my camera. Every time I felt this desire, my guide told me not to take the picture, for whatever it was that was interesting to my photographic eye was sacred and we were not allowed to take pictures of it.
Photos of China slide show (18) We went to China in 2007. It was an incredible journey, to say the least. I felt grateful to be in a country that not too long ago didn't let anyone in. Our trip took us to Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Suzhou, Guillin, and Hong Kong. With China's long history, 24 dynasties, and the digging up of relics all over the country, I did my best to capture this amazing culture through my photos.
Photos of Greece slide show (5) I loved Greece the first time that I went there I had to go back a second time! Some of the places we toured were Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, and Patmos. I was young to photography at the time and thus have just a few photographs to show you here. I guess I'll have to go back!
Photos of New Zealand slide show (7) We toured the south island of New Zealand, visited such places as Kaikoura, Franz Josef, and Queenstown. Beauty is everywhere.
Photos of Switzerland slide show (16) In 1928, my mother's mom and dad boarded a ship in Germany bound for Ellis Island, New York, New York. My grandparents were very poor, both from very small villages in central Switzerland. They came to America for a better, I hear, life. My grandfather was a dairy farmer and came to America because America needed dairy farmers, at that time. As a little girl, my grandparents and my mother immersed me in the Swiss Heritage: I danced the polka, yodeled the unimaginable, and cherished the Swiss Flag.
In May of 2008, I was lucky enough to travel to Switzerland with my partner, my mother, and my two aunties. We took them to their parent's villages and to the homes where their parent's lived. The pictures here reflect my love for Switzerland. And I must say, while I am a proud American citizen, I am whole because of traveling to the country my grandparent's loved so much.
